The Department of Science and Technology Davao Region strengthened its commitment to inclusive and people-centered development by capacitating its key implementing partners through a three day Cultural and Gender Sensitivity Training. The initiative forms part of DOST Davao’s broader effort to ensure that Science, Technology, and Innovation programs are delivered with fairness, cultural awareness, and respect for community identities.
DOST Davao delivers major initiatives such as Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology, Grassroots Innovation for Inclusive Development, MicroGridterprises, and the Smart and Sustainable Communities Program. These programs work closely with Indigenous Peoples communities and Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas. Because of this, cultural competency and gender sensitivity are not optional but essential in ensuring that interventions are accepted, appropriate, and genuinely beneficial.
The training emphasized that development efforts must be grounded in empathy, equity, and an understanding of local contexts. Strengthening these competencies allows implementing partners to better recognize the needs, roles, and barriers experienced by both men and women in different communities. It also helps ensure that science and technology solutions do not unintentionally reinforce inequalities but instead expand opportunities for all.
Regional Director Dr. Anthony Sales, underscored the significance of integrating these principles into DOST programs.
“Inclusive innovation begins with understanding people. When our partners are equipped with cultural and gender sensitivity, our interventions become more responsive and impactful,” Dr. Sales said.
By investing in awareness and sensitivity, DOST Davao reinforces its vision of Science that uplifts communities with respect, inclusiveness, and cultural integrity. The initiative strengthens the foundation for delivering S&T programs that empower the most vulnerable sectors and ensure no group is left behind as the Region advances in innovation and development.
